eyes of a boy, lips of a man (1999)
Early in the week I was happy to have some non-literary distraction delivered to me by one of my authors and sometime freelance photographer and designer, who designed all but one of the books in our mouthmark series, Inua Ellams. The task was simple – to create out of the multiplicities of randomness the web can provide, a design product, a music CD. It appealed to me because I’m a lover of the random, but also, as Senior Editor, I have to pitch in on design direction so I love to get my hands dirty. Plus, I miss those days in Ghana when I helped a friend set up a graphic design business and I often had to help complete projects to meet deadlines. Anyway, I will ramble no more. The distraction/task is:
1 – Go to Wikipedia. Hit “random”
or click http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random
The first random Wikipedia article you get is the name of your band.
2 – Go to Quotations Page and select “random quotations”
or click http://www.quotationspage.com/random.php3
The last four or five words of the very last quote on the page is the title of your first album.
3 – Go to Flickr and click on “explore the last seven days”
or click http://www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days
Third picture, no matter what it is, will be your album cover.
4 – Use Photoshop, Illustrator or similar to put it all together.
I have pasted my result below. If you decide to try it, please put a link in the comments on this post so I can check it out.
