A Short History:
Founded in 2001 (as an offshoot of a Ghanaian company started in 1999 as a conduit for new writing from Africa) flipped eye publishing limited publishes original poetry and prose on a not-for-profit model. The not-for-profit approach has allowed flipped eye to focus on developing new writers with potential, thus facilitating the emergence of truly unique literary talent. We are dedicated to producing consistently high quality fiction, non-fiction and related products, with a focus on poetry and authors who are comfortable with a live audience. This means that, while we seek to publish high quality literature, our authors are signed, not only based on how well they write, but also how well they communicate with an audience. This is because we consider conversation to be the oldest and most enduring form of literary creation. The company now encompasses the lubin & kleyner imprint (acquired in 2005) for fiction.
Since releasing our first book, flipped eye has gained recognition as an innovative publisher, known for its iconic book covers and unconventional approach to marketing and distribution.
Editorially, we are guided by five aspirations:
- to publish intellectually profound work that is lucid through a focus on clarity as opposed to exhibitionism;
- to raise the profile of performance and oral literature as legitimate and viable forms of artistic interpretation and learning;
- to publish literature that is affordable and accessible to less privileged audiences;
- to unearth talent from non-mainstream sources and underrepresented groups;
- and to constantly leverage technology to facilitate the spread of literature.
Shortlisted for the Independent Publishers Guild’s Diversity Award in 2007, we are the only publisher in the UK to retail quality full poetry collections for under £7. We have also won awards from the Poetry Book Society and been featured in The Independent on Sunday (UK), Metro (New York, US), Straight No Chaser (UK) and on About.com (US) and ReadySteadyBook.com (UK). Our live readings are numerous and legendary.
