Call for Submissions - Black, Brown and Art: 365 + 100 (The Hot 5 Project)

Call for Submissions

Black, Brown and Art: 365 + 100 – an anthology of poetry exploring innovation, history and coincidence through the work of Duke Ellington, Art Tatum and Mahalia Jackson – editor to be confirmed.

flipped eye publishing seeks submissions for Black, Brown and Art: 365 + 100, a new anthology of poetry based on ideas arising from a single item of trivia: On February 12, 1958 while recording Black Brown and Beige with Duke, Mahalia (best known as a clean-talking Gospel pioneer) swore… The date was exactly a year and 100 days after Art Tatum died.

From this starting point, we encourage writers to delve into the coincidence and the linkages between their artistry. For example, how Art’s chords or Mahalia’s voice might fill the often sparse compositions Duke created.

You may submit up to 3 poems (maximum of 60 lines) per person.

Submissions are by e-mail only to hot5@flippedeye.net and should contain the word ‘Art’ in the subject field (submissions without it will be automatically filtered out).

The deadline for submissions is May 20 2006.

Black, Brown and Art: 365 + 100 is part of a 5-book box set of poetry anthologies called The Hot 5, all edited by leading poets from around the world. The set will be accompanied by jazz compositions produced by the pioneering London jazz label Dune Records.
