Call for Submissions - So Long John (The Hot 5 Project)

Call for Submissions

So Long John – an anthology of poetry on the lives, careers and relevance of cultural icons, Coltrane, Lee Hooker, Lennon – Jazz, Blues, Pop – edited by Roddy Lumsden.

flipped eye publishing seeks submissions for So Long John, a new anthology of poetry covering three of the most name-dropped musicians in the world – John Coltrane, John Lee Hooker and John Lennon.

Their images can be found on postcards all over the world, their music remains part of everyday popular culture through films and advertisements and a fierce individualistic streak ran through them all (this includes all the personalities John Lee Hooker recorded as to circumvent bent producers), not unlike the ‘own law’ approach of pirates – ergo “Long John”. We are looking for poetry that builds on these themes as well as ideas of legacy, cult influence and the way mass media create histories.

You may submit up to 3 poems (maximum of 60 lines) per person.

Submissions are by e-mail only to hot5@flippedeye.net and should contain the word ‘John’ in the subject field (submissions without it will be automatically filtered out).

The deadline for submissions is May 20 2006.

About the Editor: Roddy Lumsden’s debut Yeah Yeah Yeah (Bloodaxe 1997) was shortlisted for the Forward and Saltire prizes and he has since published three other collections of poetry and a book of trivia, Vitamin Q. He was "poet-in-residence" to the music industry in 1999 and co-wrote The Message, a book on poetry and pop music.

So Long John is part of a 5-book box set of poetry anthologies called The Hot 5, all edited by leading poets from around the world. The set will be accompanied by jazz compositions produced by the pioneering London jazz label Dune Records.
