Call for Submissions - Bob-Re:Pac-Aged (The Hot 5 Project)

Call for Submissions

Bob-Re:Pac-Aged – an anthology of poetry exploring of the political vision of Bob Marley and Tupac Shakur and imagining what their place/politics would be if they had aged. Edited by Nikki Giovanni.

flipped eye publishing seeks submissions for Bob-Re:Pac-Aged, a new anthology of poetry imagination the evolution of the politics and ideology of Robert Nesta Marley and Tupac Shakur into present times.

Poetry submitted will attempt to dissect the political vision of Bob Marley and Tupac Shakur and imagine what their place/politics would be if they had aged. For example, by looking at Bob’s work and how it developed one can imagine the progression that Tupac might have made. For example, Bob’s work at age 25 (the age at which Tupac recorded All Eyez on Me and died) like Back Out & Caution (1970) is very much about tough living conditions in Trenchtown – similar to a lot of the lyrics on All Eyez on Me e.g. Life Goes On, I Ain’t Mad Atcha – compared to universality of Redemption Song and the subtle politics of even the radio-friendly Could You Be Loved. The 10-year journey of growth between those songs of Marley’s is a journey Tupac missed. However, they shared the same streak of belief that opposing sides could be united e.g. Tupac tried to unite the Bloods & Crips gang members through picnics, while Bob Marley tried to reconcile Manley and Seaga, fierce political opponents who split the ghettos of Kingston along gang lines, at a concert.

You may submit up to 3 poems (maximum of 60 lines) per person.

Submissions are by e-mail only to hot5@flippedeye.net and should contain the word ‘Pac’ in the subject field (submissions without it will be automatically filtered out).

The deadline for submissions is May 20 2006.

About the Editor: Nikki Giovanni has published several collections of poetry, including her widely-referenced debut, Black Feeling, Black Talk, and is the recipient of honours such as the Langston Hughes award for Distinguished Contributions to Arts and Letters (1996) and NAACP Image Award for Literature (1998). Call for Submissions - So Long John (The Hot 5 Project)

Call for Submissions

So Long John – an anthology of poetry on the lives, careers and relevance of cultural icons, Coltrane, Lee Hooker, Lennon – Jazz, Blues, Pop – edited by Roddy Lumsden.

flipped eye publishing seeks submissions for So Long John, a new anthology of poetry covering three of the most name-dropped musicians in the world – John Coltrane, John Lee Hooker and John Lennon.

Their images can be found on postcards all over the world, their music remains part of everyday popular culture through films and advertisements and a fierce individualistic streak ran through them all (this includes all the personalities John Lee Hooker recorded as to circumvent bent producers), not unlike the ‘own law’ approach of pirates – ergo “Long John”. We are looking for poetry that builds on these themes as well as ideas of legacy, cult influence and the way mass media create histories.

You may submit up to 3 poems (maximum of 60 lines) per person.

Call for Submissions - Black, Brown and Art: 365 + 100 (The Hot 5 Project)

Call for Submissions

Black, Brown and Art: 365 + 100 – an anthology of poetry exploring innovation, history and coincidence through the work of Duke Ellington, Art Tatum and Mahalia Jackson – editor to be confirmed.

flipped eye publishing seeks submissions for Black, Brown and Art: 365 + 100, a new anthology of poetry based on ideas arising from a single item of trivia: On February 12, 1958 while recording Black Brown and Beige with Duke, Mahalia (best known as a clean-talking Gospel pioneer) swore… The date was exactly a year and 100 days after Art Tatum died.

From this starting point, we encourage writers to delve into the coincidence and the linkages between their artistry. For example, how Art’s chords or Mahalia’s voice might fill the often sparse compositions Duke created.

You may submit up to 3 poems (maximum of 60 lines) per person.

Submissions are by e-mail only to hot5@flippedeye.net and should contain the word ‘Art’ in the subject field (submissions without it will be automatically filtered out).

Call for Submissions - BLEU (The Hot 5 Project)

BLEU (Billie, Louis & Ella Upwind) – an anthology of poetry celebrating the music, life and politics of Billie Holliday, Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald edited by Kamau Brathwaite.

flipped eye publishing seeks submissions for BLEU, a new anthology of poetry centred around the music, lives and politics of Billie Holliday, Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald. We are looking for work that explores these areas as widely as possible but is rich and innovative, showing an awareness of the political climate within which these musicians lived. Writers who do not already have an interest in these artists might find that a little bit of reading about their lives will give the necessary context and texture to their work; however, it’s worth noting that all three musicians performed largely in the 20s, 30s and 40s when the United States of America was segregated. Further, they were well known for their ability to transform text/music in the way they presented and interpreted it.

You may submit up to 3 poems (maximum of 60 lines) per person.

Submissions are by e-mail only to hot5@flippedeye.net and should contain the word BLEU in the subject field (submissions without it will be automatically filtered out).

The deadline for submissions is May 20 2006.

About the Editor: Kamau Brathwaite is the acclaimed author of several collections of poetry including Black + Blues (1976), Mother Poem (1977), Trench Town Rock (1993), and ARK (2005) ref 9/11 and inspired by Coleman Hawkins' 'Body & Soul' and a critique, 'Jazz and the West Indian novel' in ROOTS (1986, 1993). He has received the Neustadt International Award for Literature, the Casa de Las Americas Prize for poetry and for literary criticism, as well as fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Fulbright Foundation, and the Ford Foundation. He is a professor of comparative literature at New York University and shares his time between CowPastor, Barbados and New York.
