7FEST - The Foundation

To mark our 7th anniversary, we are putting on an event called The Foundation (the first in a series under the banner 7Fest) - a marathon 11 hours of FREE readings, discussions and book signings at the Poetry Cafe. For 7 hours from 12 noon to 7pm.

We will have sofa sessions - small intimate readings in the basement of the Poetry Cafe, where the authors will sit in sofas reading to a small circle of listeners --
Then from 7pm there will be a series of "full-fledged traditional, energetic flipped eye style readings with loud whoops and a full house".

The event details are as below:

12.00-12.40: NEW FICTION
Aoife Mannix reads from her forthcoming novel, Heritage of Secrets, and fiction editor, Nii Ayikwei Parkes, reads from Ainsley Burrows' forthcoming novel, Land of our Birth.

13.00-13.40: REDIRECTION
Roger Robinson, Nick Makoha and Inua Ellams read from their forthcoming work and talk about the differences in the processes of drafting, compiling, editing as compared to their phenomenally successful first collections.

14.00-14.40: WRITING OBSESSIONS

Roger Robinson, Inua Ellams, Aoife Mannix and Malika Booker talk about what their current writing obsessions are embracing a gamut of objects, other books, poetic forms, prose arcs, new approaches to metaphor, and weird sleeping habits - all sorts of things that somehow relate to their writing.

15.00-15.40: QUESTION THE EDITORS
Niall O'Sullivan and Nii Ayikwei Parkes will talk about the experience of editing and in-house editing experiences, mainly by taking questions from the audience.

16.00 - BOOK SIGNING: Authors in attendance will include Roger Robinson, Inua Ellams, Malika Booker and Niall O'Sullivan

17.30-18.25: FORTHCOMING POETRY
Jacob Sam-La Rose, Charlotte Ansell and Nick Makoha read exclusively from their forthcoming poetry books

Our writers include characters with millions of airmiles and freedom passes in their pockets as well as fledglings with pocket change and airy dreams of flying: This session puts Agnes Meadows side-by-side with Inua Ellams to showcase the poetry of generations that span post-WW2 to post-II2 (Iraq Invasion 2) .

Nick Makoha, author of The Lost Collection of an Invisible Man, will appear at the African Writers' Evening this Thursday 20 March 2008. Details below:

For the month of March, the month of Ghana's independence and the most recent national assembly elections in Uganda, we are proud to present the two AWE hosts from last year - Nick Makoha of Uganda and Nii Ayikwei Parkes from Ghana. Under the banner of Old Faces, New Work, Nick will be reading exclusive new material from his forthcoming debut poetry book, which builds on the success of his acclaimed chapbook The Lost Collection of an Invisible Man, while Nii will be reading from his debut novel, Tail of the Blue Bird, which will be released in April 2009 by Jonathan Cape. Nii will introduce Nick Makoha and host the first half and Nick will introduce Nii and host the second half. We hope you'll join us for what promises to be a brilliant evening of poetry and prose.

Author Biographies:

Nick Makoha: Nick Makoha is a hugely gifted poet of Ugandan origin, with an uncommon talent for loaded one-liners. Original poet-in-residence with London's revered performance showcase, Kindred Spirit, Nick (perfoming under the moniker urbanspirit) catapulted himself to legendary status by disappearing off the poetry scene for two years. He re-emerged in early 2005 with The Lost Collection of an Invisible Man and is now working on a new collection to be released in 2008 by flipped eye publishing.

Nii Ayikwei Parkes: Nii Ayikwei Parkes is a Ghanaian writer of poetry, prose and articles who has published three poetry chapbooks:eyes of a boy, lips of a man (1999); M is for Madrigal (2004), a selection of seven jazz poems; and shorter (2005). His is also a contributing editor to The Liberal, and runs the African Writers' Evening series at the Poetry Cafe, in Covent Garden, London. Nii's poem, Tin Roof, was selected for the 'Poems on the Underground' initiative in 2007 and his debut novel, Tail of the Blue Bird, will be released in April 2009 by Jonathan Cape.

The Caribbean Cultural Theatre celebrates Black History Month with another episode of Evening Time: Poets and Passion featuring internationally acclaimed poet, record producer and Boys and Girls High School alumni Ainsley Burrows on Wednesday, February 27^th at 7pm at the Brooklyn Public Library, Grand Army Plaza branch. Burrows, known for his wit, charm and compelling themes is set to host the after-work session which seeks to entertain and enlighten while exploring Caribbean realities and the Caribbean American experience. Ainsley Burrows is recognized for his thought provoking, politically intense themes which spare no group his appraisal while raising the bar. He stands head and shoulder above the mundane.

Ainsley Burrows has performed at festivals, cafés and institutions across Europe, America, Canada and the Caribbean and has received several international awards. These include Best International Performer of 2001 and 2002 from the Farrago Poetry Café in London, Munich's International Poetry Slam Championship award in 2001 and two awards from the Nuyorican Poet's Café; one in 2001 for participating in the National team and the other in 2004 for being the Coach of the National team. In addition, Ainsley has conducted many workshops from London's Hackney Community College to New York's Julliard School of Music.

To celebrate the release of our new, international short story anthology, x -24: unclassified, a selection of writers from the book will read at an exclusive event supported by the Barbican Library this Wednesday. In attendance will be the editors Tash Aw and Nii Ayikwei Parkes, who will speak briefly about the joys and challenges of putting together an anthology that includes work by writers from Ecuador, Nigeria, Peru, and the United States (to name but a few).

I’m off to the Austin International Poetry Festival in Texas as a Guest Poet (they pay me to be there, so how can I resist) on April 12th and will be away until 24th.

April’s LOOSE MUSE promises to be one of the best yet, lined up on WEDNESDAY 11th APRIL at the Poetry Café, 22 Betterton Street, London WC2 (closest tube = Covent Garden). This is a monthly event for women writers of all genres, with two featured women writers and open mike readings from the floor to share and explore work. Featured in April we have VICTORIA BENNET and GILL HANDS, poets and writers who also run the uncontrollably successful Wild Women Press in Cumbria, who will be reading from their fabulous high quality work, and also revealing some of the pro’s and con’s of running a thriving small press. Also we have MARLENE SIDEAWAY – actress, playwright and poet, here Marlene shares excerpts from her successful one-woman show “Cloak and Dagger”, and talks about how to take such a show on the road. Just a last minute reminder regarding poetry competition that I’m helping to organize, the deadline for which has been extended to the 23^rd OCTOBER. The ‘ROAD to FREEDOM’ poetry competition is open to all poets. Burma is now one of the poorest countries in the world, its people one of the most oppressed. This year alone, 4 Burmese writers were sentenced to 7-19 years in prison for publishing a book of poetry, and their democratically elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi (The Lady) has been under house arrest for 11 of the past 17 years. This poetry competition is dedicated to her and to all writers silenced by brutal regimes. All proceeds go to Prospect Burma www.prospectburma.org Registered Charity No: 802615

1^st prize - £200, 2^nd prize - £50, 3^rd prize - £25 + 6 ‘Highly Recommended’ get a selection of books. The ‘Road to Freedom’ Poetry Competition is open to anyone, anywhere. All poems should be written on the central theme of Freedom, either in Burma, or elsewhere where liberty is no longer part of the human equation. Rules as follows:

-Each poem should be no longer than 40 lines, and typed on one side of A4.

-There is no limit on the number of poems submitted by each entrant. Each poem must be typed on a separate A4 sheet, and will be judged separately.

-All entries must be written in English and be the original, work of the entrant.

-Entry fee £5 (US$9.50) for first poem and £3 (US$5.50) for each additional poem. Payment for overseas entries must be made by credit card. Please give name of credit card, account no., expiry date, + signature.

-Cheques/money orders should be payable to Prospect Burma, and sent with your poem(s). Entries received without accompanying payment will not be deemed eligible.

-Closing date is now MONDAY 23^RD OCTOBER, 2006.

hip hop emcees, short films, theatrical horror acts, weaponised art
