from You and Me
You and me laying in that stolen bed, where you’d taken carnations from the garden
so I wouldn’t wake alone,
Covering my body with flower petals,
Licking the dew off the leaves,
Where the pleasure was so intense I thought I’d die of it,
And you said you’d die anyway,
So I had to walk away in case it killed me outright.
We seized time as if we were immortal,
Passion knitted into the warp and weft of days, and weeks,
Years of life,
An endless ribbon snaking out, until the loom became invisible.
At night the churchyard was filled with candles,
Roses cascading from an Indian heaven into cathedrals filled with gold, and light, and loving,
Foreign angels and saviours absorbing the darkness,
Like you and me for that sweet present.
